Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition
On Tuesday, the 25th of June, Ruby in Year 3, Lily in Year 4, and ourselves, Riley in Year 5 and Nicholas in Year 6, travelled to Petersham Public School to compete in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking District Competition. Phew, now that’s a mouthful! We left at 9.15am and were driven by the wonderful Ms Keane. When we arrived, it took a long time for the adjudicator to arrive.
The next day (just kidding!) he arrived and the Years 3 and 4 competition began. Up first was our Ruby herself! She talked about “Children should be seen and heard”. She did a cracking job! There were 6 more great speeches after Ruby’s then it was Lily’s turn to show what Ferncourt was made of. Her topic was “Every family has a story”. She was fantastic! The speech was hilarious and serious at the same time.
After all the speakers had spoken, it was time for the impromptus. For those of you who aren’t sure about what an impromptu is, we’ll explain. You have 5 minutes to create a speech on a certain topic. It is much, much, much harder than it sounds! The topic was “Fun and games”. Once again the first speaker was Ruby. She did a beautiful job, wrapping it up really well! A while later, our Lily was ready! She was amazing!
And now it was time for the big announcement: And the winner was……… LILY!!! And in second was……… RUBY!!! We’ve never seen someone so happy! Lily was ecstatic!!
Up next was the Years 5 and 6 competition. Nick was the second speaker. He was phenomenal! He talked about “Racial Harmony- Are we there yet?” Later on, it was Riley’s time to shine! By the time it was Riley’s turn you could tell that they were up against a few brilliant speakers. Riley was spectacular! He had a fantastic couple of gestures. He talked about the term “Un-Australian” It was awesome! At this point it was really hard to determine who had won, all the speeches were great!
And now it was time for the impromptus, it was going to really test them to the limit.
The topic was “Bright Ideas”. Yet again, Nick was second. He pulled it off brilliantly! With some humour, he was able to speak a magnificent impromptu. Riley was fantastic too.
Who had won? And the winner was……. ISABELLA FROM WILKINS!!! Oh well, we did our best.
Congratulations, Lily! Lily will be representing our district in the Regional competition very soon. Wish her luck!
P.S. A tribute to Odessa in Year 6. She is a fantastic public speaker. Originally she would have been going with Nick to the district but she became very ill just 2 weeks before the competition so Riley took her place. We bet our lives that if she had been there, she would have won.
