Testing the water...

E-mail Print PDF

One of the projects we've been working on is getting Streamwatch testing of the water quality in the Cooks River going as a regular activity for Ferncourt Students.

Over the last week or so Mr McPherson has been working through a kit from the Australian Museum with the kids from his class 5/6M.

We had the first water testing session with the kids today. It was a great success, the kids really enjoyed it - even finding quite a few clams, worms and other creatures in the mud down near Mackay Park - who would have thought!

Ferncourt fencing champions

Ferncourt was represented at the inaugural School Championship Under-13 Sabre competition held recently at Marrickville PCYC.

Sebastian (Yr 5) and Finlay (Yr 4) represented the school in the individual event. Both made it to the second (elimination) round. Congratulations on your efforts boys!

For the teams event each school needed three members from the same school.. Mosman Prep was the only school with enough fencers to form a team (in fact, 2 teams). At least one more team was needed to run the event, so Finlay was invited to be on a composite school team with two boys from other schools.

Their "Special Forces" team held off the two Mosman Prep teams to win the event in a thrilling close finish!

The boys were unable to be awarded the gold medal as they were not a legitimate team from a single school, but they were still the winners and were awarded blue ribbons.(see below. That’s Finlay in the middle above.) Hopefully the record will show that Ferncourt was part of the team that won this inaugural event. It would be great if next year we could have enough fencers from Ferncourt to enter a Ferncourt team.

If you are interested in fencing talk to Finlay or his mother Deanna Jones and find out where you can learn this ancient sport.  Maybe next year you could be in a team representing Ferncourt.

Picture our Eco-Learning Area

E-mail Print PDF

Recently a small group of Year 3-6 students created water-coloured drawings of Ferncourt’s Eco-Learning area and other gardens throughout the school.  Working with Ms O’Donnell we sketched our drawings and used water-colour to finish them off. In our drawings we included many different plants, flowers, fruit, vegetables and people.

The watercolours are in line for selection to be included in a Teacher’s Credit Union published coffee table garden book of public school gardens and eco-learning areas. I think we did a great job and found the experience lots of fun. Our thanks to Ms O’Donnell working with us.

Conservation volunteers visit our gully

Conservation volunteers help with the upkeep of our native gully

In the gully at the back of Ferncourt, parents and volunteers planted native trees and plants that were originally found in the area.
Now, a few years later, work is being done to maintain the gully that will eventually grow to be like a mini rainforest.

We pulled out many weeds in species such as Morning Glory, Asthma Weed and Farmers’ Friend, which were crowding out the native plants.

Michael (Easton), who is in charge of the whole operation, showed us plants like the Wild Raspberry and a tree with leaves like sandpaper.

It was very physical work and we were all exhausted at the end but we were very satisfied with our work.

Gala Show goes to Oz

What a great night the Gala Show was this year, with the theme: The Wonderful Land of Oz. Here are some recounts from 1W:

"I loved the evening show. It was fantastic. I loved the costumes and 1W's costumes were the best." Charlotte Gibson.

"My favourite one would have been the first one - the beach one because it had surf boards." Noah Lynn.

"I was nervous and then I wasn't anymore." Alice Kreis.

"I was a coral and the coral had flowers - red and pink. I felt happy and laughed and laughed." Aidan Gani.

"The town hall was big and the lights were shining. I was a shark and Brigid was a shark too. I had to follow Brigid wherever she was going. The gala concert was the best thing ever that I have seen in my whole life." Jayden Elmasri.
