Stage 3 Ferncourt students, Miranda and Jayden, attended Yarn Up 2011 - a public speaking program for Primary School Indigenous students. On the 25th July, 8th August and 2nd September 2011 students from Sydney Region schools attended three workshops at Parliament House, Sydney, and gained valuable skills in impromptu speaking, listening, body language, giving feedback, debating and preparing a speech. In addition students were given three public speaking plans to assist in planning speeches: Past, Present, Future; Who, What, When, Where, Why, How; and P.R.E.P (Point, Reason, Example, Point).

The final session gave students the opportunity of using these skills in impromptu and prepared speeches. Special guest, Dr Phil Lambert, Regional Director, NSW Department Education and Training, NSW, attended on the final day and presented students with certificates.

On behalf of our students who attended we would like to thank Jane Stanley, Aunty Fay Carroll, Zea Vargas and the wonderful team whose expertise in teaching public speaking, has afforded our kids these important life skills.

We look forward to supporting this wonderful initiative next year.
