The Arts and Music

The arts are a much valued part of life at Ferncourt. The school and the P&C provide the following opportunities, during and outside of school time:

Music

Bands
Ferncourt has award winning training and performing concert bands open to Years 3-6. In 2008 a hotly contested audition process led to the establishment of our first rock band.

   

Music for the early years
Ferncourt's long running recorder program for students K-3 has now broadened. We offer the Jellybean program which teaches singing, movement, percussion, glockenspiel, recorder, aural skill, composing and improvisation as a foundation to future music study. Since 2008 students have performed in Combined Schools Recorder Ensemble at the Sydney Opera House. This is continuing. 

Choirs
We have a choir open to all in Years 2-6 and an ensemble, 'The Ferntastics', which is a smaller auditioned group of experienced singers. In 2008 the Ferntastics entered an original piece in the Wakakirri National Song Contest. They performed at the National Finals at the Entertainment Centre in September and were crowned NSW winners of the story-song category. 

Students in our music program regularly perform in public at community festivals and events and school festivities and assemblies.

Music/Drama

All students take part in our exciting Gala Concert at Marrickville Town Hall every second year, showcasing their talents. Students design and make sets and costumes and dance, sing, play music and act. Musical theatre classes are also offered at the school.

Dance

In addition to in-school dance tuition, we have boys and general dance classes offered at lunch time.

Visual arts

In 2007 the school hired a visual arts consultant to work with teachers and students to prepare for a major arts exhibition. We will continue this every second year, rotating with the Gala Concert. Students in Year 5 and 6 attend an art camp at Bundanon. The P&C have converted a store room into an art studio. This is the site of after-school art classes.

Sport

Students participate in district swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals. In Terms 3 and 4 we offer PSSA Friday sport in OzTag, AusKick, Netball and Soccer. We have yearly compulsory swimming lessons for eight weeks in Term 2 and Dance2BFit lessons in Term 4. All students enjoy weekly Gymnastics classes for the entire year. Teachers run an after school Active Kids Program.
