A caring, community school
Ferncourt Public School is a NSW government school teaching Kindergarten to Year 6 students. We have approximately 350 students enrolled in 2010 and our numbers continue to grow. Ferncourt is a successful example of multiculturalism in action, with students belonging to families from around the globe. See our last annual report in the attachment section below.
Heritage school and award winning grounds
We are located in South Marrickville, near the Cooks River, in an area known as "The Warren". The administration building was built in 1886. Our impressive, award winning school grounds are beautifully maintained, with large Moreton Bay Fig trees, outdoor furniture, basketball and netball courts, a soccer field, cricket nets and grassed areas. We recently were awarded funds to build a school hall. An active P&C environment group have created a native rainforest gully to complement our peace and rose gardens and Eco Learning Area (with pond, vegetable patch, fungi garden and herb spiral and a weekly school garden club). We have a blog about our Eco Learning Area.
Love of learning
Our teachers are committed to helping all children reach their full potential across all key areas, including literacy, maths, science and technology, human society and the environment, the arts and sport. We have small class sizes (20 and under) for the early years and offer a five week transition program for kindergarten starters in the year before they begin school.
Technology
Facilities include computers in every classroom, a computer lab, interactive whiteboards and a well-resourced library. We have installed a 'connected classroom', with interactive whiteboards and video conferencing, allowing digital technology to link students with outside resources.
A supportive, friendly environment
We have a comprehensive buddy and peer support system and promote the 'Bounce Back!' resilience program. We have successful anti-bullying and discipline programs and a school counsellor. We also have various support programs for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Active, well-rounded students
Our extra-curricula activities include two school bands, two choirs, a K-3 before school music program, dance groups, drama, art classes, piano lessons, public speaking, debating, a gardening club and an 'Active Kids' after school sports program. More details about these activities and their times is found in the attachment section below.
Before, after school and vacation care
Before and after school and vacation care is provided on the school grounds by Marrickville Council.
A dynamic school community
Our active and creative P&C works enthusiastically to enrich the lives of students and their families. Visit our P&C website. Parents raise funds, care for the school environment, share their expertise in the classroom and organise events. The P&C runs an adult community choir called 'Warren' and offers yoga classes for parents. The school also hosts a morning playgroup for pre-schoolers and their carers.
